This also gives us more time at our morning meeting to discuss more relevant topics without the same conversation every day. We have a quick weather report right before we go outside to recess (rather than morning meeting) which is when the children really need to know the weather. A calendar in which there is only one month and the days are added as you go does not allow the tool to be used to reflect or look ahead. Even in their beginning understanding of time, there are some elements of the calendar that they understand and appreciate. My 4's like to use it to look ahead or back on what we have done. This makes the calendar an accurate measurement tool for time. We use a regular calendar like adults use and record information rather than adding a day each time. This is an interesting article on calendar use in preschool. Or course there are math and language concepts that can be embedded into a calendar routine,but young children perceive time differently than adults do so what may be meaningful to us is not necessarily so for the children. This keeps the morning meeting less monotonous. Then we have a message which sparks a conversation pertaining to classroom concerns or concepts. Now we begin with a song, count how many children present, and see what is on the calendar for the day. As a result I took out some of the routines we used to do. I have also been wrestling with these elements of the morning routine for the past few years.
